Activated Carbon for Water Filtration: PAC vs. GAC in Municipal & Industrial Treatment

Selecting the Optimal Carbon Geometry for Water Purification

Activated carbon is widely acknowledged as the gold standard for removing organic contaminants, chlorine, disinfection byproducts, taste, and odor from industrial and municipal water. However, water treatment plant engineers frequently must decide between two primary physical forms: Powdered Activated Carbon (PAC) and Granular Activated Carbon (GAC).

1. Powdered Activated Carbon (PAC): Rapid Kinetic Adsorption

PAC is pulverized coconut shell activated carbon with particle sizing typically between 200 and 325 mesh (44 to 74 microns). Because of its microscopic particle size, the diffusion distance for contaminants to enter internal pores is extremely short.

  • Best For: Periodic or seasonal contamination surges, such as algal blooms releasing Geosmin and 2-MIB (earthy/musty odors), agricultural pesticide runoff, and emergency spill containment.
  • Dosing Method: Directly fed into coagulation tanks, clarifiers, or rapid mix basins as a slurry and subsequently removed via sand filtration or sediment basins.
  • Key Advantage: Minimal upfront capital expenditure—no dedicated contactor vessels required.

2. Granular Activated Carbon (GAC): Continuous Fixed-Bed Treatment

GAC consists of irregularly shaped particles ranging from 8x30 to 12x40 mesh. GAC is packed into deep gravity or pressurized filtration columns through which process water continuously flows.

  • Best For: Continuous point-of-entry municipal drinking water treatment, total organic carbon (TOC) reduction, industrial boiler feedwater de-chlorination, and tertiary wastewater polishing.
  • Operational Life: Can operate continuously for 1 to 3 years before bed exhaustion.
  • Key Advantage: Regenerable and reusable, with low continuous operational labor once vessels are installed.

Why Coconut Shell Carbon Excels in Both Applications

Whether using PAC or GAC, coconut shell base material offers distinct technical benefits over coal or peat:

  • Higher Micropore Volume: Excels at capturing small, low-molecular-weight organic compounds, pesticides, and VOCs that bypass broader coal mesopores.
  • High Mechanical Hardness: Coconut GAC possesses a hardness rating of $\ge 98\%$, virtually eliminating dust generation and bed attrition during backwash cycles.
  • Lower Ash Content: Minimizes leachate contamination and preserves water pH balance.
